Geographic Information System (GIS) Background
A GIS is a coordinated system of software, hardware, data and personnel. The software consists of a program that links geographic or map data with a relational database. The data is represented as a layer in the GIS. For example, there may be a layer in a GIS representing city locations. A point in the layer would have a set of attributes or tabular data that describe that point in the database, for example, the city's name, its population, etc. Other map data for the same area would be stored as additional layers. These layers could hold information such as property information or site boundaries. The GIS allows the user to:

• Input

• Manipulate

• Manage

• Query and Analyze

• Display geographic data and its companion attribute data.

About the Interactive Map
ESRI's ArcIMS™ (Internet Map Server) software provides the foundation for viewing and disseminating geographic information on the internet. Rather than viewing maps as static images, ArcIMS allows for dynamic interaction with the map. The ArcIMS viewer offers tools for viewing and querying geographic data, as well as performing spatial analysis tasks such as selecting map features. Using the ArcIMS viewer, you can:

• Pan and zoom the map's extent

• Query spatial and attribute data

• Measure distances on the map

• Control the visibility of map layers

• Perform a keyword search for map features

• Print maps

The ArcIMS service is very data intensive. The ArcIMS service is designed as an Image Server and requires significant communication between the clients and the server. So, please be patient and wait till all the frames have loaded completely.

Browser Requirements
The mapping service utilizes ArcIMS software and is a JAVA intensive application. It is strongly recommended that you meet the requirements to use this application. For Windows based client systems:

• Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher.

• Mozilla 1.3 or higher

• Netscape 4.7 or higher

Clients using Macintosh, the following are recommended:

• Netscape 7.1 for Macintosh

• Safari 1.2.x for Macintosh

• Mozilla 1.7 for Macintosh

Draw times from 10 seconds up to 45 seconds may be expected. Please allow the application to complete each request before continuing. Clicking another request before the operation has completed slows down the application and may cause an error.

This application requires a minimum screen resolution of 800 by 600 pixels to display properly. Higher resolutions are recommended. Too high a resolution; however, will slow down the process and may cause an error. The optimal screen resolution is 1024 by 768 pixels.
