BRC Begins Building CAMU | BRC Begins Building CAMU |
|
After 18 years of study, research and design, Basic Remediation Company (BRC) is building
a modern CAMU (Corrective Action Managment Unit) where the waste materials from the BRC Eastside property will be safely interred. The CAMU underwent six years of review by the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection (NDEP) to ensure it will safely store all of the contaminated soil from the 2,300 acre site. After receiving NDEP final approval on the CAMU plans, BRC began construction in August 2007. The approximately 66-acre CAMU is located on private land owned by BRC's parent company, Basic Management Inc. (BMI), near Auto Show Drive and Eastgate Road. In August 2007, crews from Las Vegas Paving contractors removed the first 110,000 cubic yards of clean dirt to partially create the south borrow pit. By January 2008, Meadow Valley, another crew on the project, had removed an additional 350,000 cubic yards of clean dirt to enlarge the pits. With more than 460,000 cubic yards of clean soil removed, the north and south borrow pits are more than 35 feet deep. Photos All of the clean soil that is being removed will be put to good use. Some of it will be used on road embankments and the rest in the construction of the CAMU itself. Once the borrow pits are completed, a high-tech liner system will be inserted into the CAMU before any of the contaminated soil is put in place. When finished, the CAMU will be capped and monitored per NDEP and Environmental Protection Agency requirements. This entire project is funded solely with private dollars.
